Creating a collection of candles to match our Soaps is something we are incredibly passionate about. They needed to meet the high standards we set when crafting our soap. This is why we decided to use 100% natural Soy Wax.
The soy wax we use is 100% GM free and no pesticides or herbicides are used at any stage in its cultivation. Soya beans are, of course, a renewable source and the wax is naturally bio-degradable.
But we want to make sure our candles match up to the amazing scents we love in our soaps, and the great thing is that soy also has “excellent fragrance-holding qualities” – that means our candles give a long-lasting, even scent through out the time they burn. Soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin wax, which is made from crude oil, that can blacken walls as well as releasing toxic carcinogens in to the air.
We don’t use dyes in our candles, so they are all white, or cream in colour, with a smooth and clean finish. We don’t add any other chemicals or artificial additives to our individually handmade candles. Our wicks are also 100% natural and are designed specifically to burn best in soy wax candles. The soy wax we use is also easy to clean up with soap and hot water, eliminating the need for solvents and messy wax stains should any spill happen.
As with any other candles, soy candles must be burned properly to get the most out of them, and for safety reasons. Here are some tips on how to burn our candles.
Soy candle wax has what’s called a memory. That means that when you burn a soy candle and then extinguish it, the next time you burn it, the soy candle wax will melt across as far as it did the first time.
This is why it is so important to allow soy candles to burn all the way across to the edge of the container the first time you burn it before putting it out. This ensures that your soy candle does not “tunnel” as it burns, leaving wax along the sides of the container. The Melt pool in the middle of our candles is where the scent is and a good melt pool will give off the best fragrance. 1/4in deep for the melt pool is what you should aim for in your candles when the candle is burning.
Too shallow of a melt pool will keep the candle from releasing the best amount of fragrance into the room. Too deep of a melt pool means the wick is too big for the candle and the candle will burn too hot , which means the soy candles wax will burn up too fast and the wick would need to be trimmed much more often.
Keeping your wick trimmed to about 1/4in will also keep your soy candles from smoking and causing soot.
And most importantly, keep your soy candles away from anything flameable, and out of reach of children and pets.
